Drivers
Probably every driver knows that wearing glasses when driving is not always comfortable. This is a particularly difficult situation for people suffering from astigmatism.
About 40% of patients who are operated on for cataracts also have a problem with this sight defect. Merely operating on the cataract is not enough to restore proper sight, ophthalmological assistance is also vital for the correction of astigmatism. Until recently two such corrective methods were used, introduced after the cataract surgery. These were most commonly classic spectacles for distant and near vision with the appropriate “bottle tops”, more rarely laser correction to get rid of the astigmatism once and for all.
Since recently, people suffering from cataracts and astigmatism can be helped. During a single operation.
This has been made possible by modern toric lenses produced by the American company Alcon. These are foldable lenses made from hydrophobic acrylic. Their toric optical shape enable corneal astigmatism to be corrected. We have several types of these lenses, which differ in the degree to which they correct astigmatism. They can be used in patients with astigmatism from 0.75 dioptries to above 2 dioptries.
Another way to correct astigmatism (although this usually applies to secondary astigmatism appearing after earlier eye operations or injuries) is laser correction based on corneal topography.
