The introduction of the SMILE method (then ReLEx® SMILE) to patients in 2012 was considered a breakthrough in refractive surgery. This is because SMILE is a “deep” method. The reshaping of the cornea, necessary to correct the vision defect, is achieved not by removing its superficial layers, but by cutting a microlens from within. The lens is removed through a microincision measuring just 2.5-4 mm in length. This minimally invasive approach ensures patients the highest post-operative comfort and the fastest return to full activity.
A groundbreaking SMILE also for hyperopia
Until recently, the innovative SMILE method could only correct nearsightedness and nearsighted astigmatism. People with hyperopia had to resort to more invasive, “superficial” methods. Only the latest generation of the femtosecond laser – the ZEISS VISUMAX 800 – allows SMILE to be used to correct farsightedness.
